Cameroon coach Pagou prioritises form and commitment in squad selection

Cameroon coach David Pagou has defended his selection approach ahead of the Indomitable Lions’ double-header against Namibia in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, saying players must demonstrate form, commitment and the desire to represent their country.

Pagou announced a 28-man squad on Monday, 26 October, at the headquarters of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), with several new faces included as he looks to introduce younger players and create a fresh dynamic within the national team.

Cameroon are scheduled to face Namibia on 12 and 16 November 2026, with the matches forming part of their campaign to qualify for the continental tournament.

Explaining the principles behind his choices, Pagou said his assessment of players went beyond their reputations and included their performances, attitude and motivation to play for the national side.

“To select a player, we talk with him, we see his performances, we see his state of mind, his motivation to come to the Indomitable Lions and above all his motivation to give his all,” he explained.

The coach said he considers a player’s current form alongside their availability and willingness to contribute to the team.

His approach suggests that established status alone will not guarantee a place in the squad, with each player expected to demonstrate the qualities required to represent Cameroon.

The latest selection also reflects Pagou’s intention to create opportunities for emerging talent as he works to reshape the group.

Among those called up are Geovanni Vianney, a striker with FC Copenhagen, and Ivan Jordan Nana, a 19-year-old midfielder who captains Cameroon’s Under-20 side.

Nana arrives after being part of the team that won the UNIFFAC Under-20 tournament, an achievement that has strengthened his case for an opportunity with the senior national team.

Pagou’s decision to include the young midfielder is consistent with his stated desire to give promising players the chance to develop at a higher level.

The coach believes introducing new talent can help refresh the squad and encourage greater competition for places.

However, the selection has also drawn attention to the absence of some familiar names.

Nouhou Tolo, who captained Cameroon during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, was not included. Pagou explained that he wanted to assess a different profile in the defender’s position, while still acknowledging Tolo’s qualities.

The omission therefore reflects a decision about the type of player the coach wants for the role rather than a dismissal of the defender’s ability.

Christian Kofane’s absence has a different explanation. The Bayer Leverkusen striker was left out because of concerns over his physical condition.

Pagou said additional medical examinations were needed to establish how the player’s injury was progressing and determine the appropriate next steps in his treatment.

The situation means Kofane’s fitness remains a consideration, although the coach’s explanation focused on the need for further medical assessment rather than a broader judgement of the striker’s ability.
