Ammouta faces growing pressure despite Al Ahly win over Modern Sport

Al Ahly coach Hussein Ammouta remains under pressure from sections of the club’s supporters despite guiding the Egyptian giants to a 1-0 victory over Modern Sport in the Egyptian Premier League.

The result at Cairo International Stadium on Thursday secured three points for Al Ahly, but concerns over the team’s performances have continued, with some fans demanding improvements in both results and playing style.

Omar El-Saaiy scored the only goal in the 17th minute, heading home a cross from Ahmed Sayed Zizo before goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir became the match-winner with a late penalty save.

Ammouta faces criticism from supporters

Despite the victory, sections of the Al Ahly fanbase remain dissatisfied with the team’s displays and have reportedly called for changes in the technical leadership.

Sports commentators, including Amir Hisham, have also questioned the team’s progress under Ammouta, arguing that the club needs to see greater improvement to meet its ambitions.

The Moroccan coach has responded to criticism by maintaining that he is working to address the team’s weaknesses and improve its performances.

Al Ahly’s management, meanwhile, is understood to be prioritising stability while assessing the team’s progress in the coming weeks.

Shobeir rescues Al Ahly against Modern Sport

Al Ahly’s victory was far from comfortable, with Modern Sport pushing for an equaliser in the closing stages.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 81st minute, but Shobeir denied Ali Fawzi from the spot to preserve Al Ahly’s advantage and secure all three points.

The win moved Al Ahly to 20 points in the league standings, although the performance did little to silence the concerns surrounding the team.

Raja Casablanca test awaits

Ammouta’s next major challenge will come in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, where Al Ahly have been drawn alongside Raja Casablanca, Togo’s ASKO de Kara and Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto.

Al Ahly are scheduled to host Raja during the third round of matches, between December 18 and 20, before travelling to Casablanca for the return fixture between January 8 and 10, 2027.

The two encounters will provide an important test of Al Ahly’s progress as Ammouta looks to strengthen the team’s position in the group and ease the growing scrutiny surrounding his leadership.
