CAF President to speak today after appeal Board verdict on AFCON 2025

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, is expected to issue a statement later today following a decision delivered by the organisation’s judicial bodies regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), handing Morocco the cup, CAF Communications Director Luxolo September has confirmed.

The development was confirmed by CAF’s Director of Communications and TV, Mr September, who said the announcement would come after a verdict was reached by the CAF Appeal Board, an independent tribunal within the governing body.

According to the brief confirmation, the Appeal Board has concluded its deliberations on a matter linked to AFCON 2025, prompting anticipation of an official response from CAF’s leadership.

The board ruled in favour of Morocco, who tendered in a protest following their game against Senegal where they lost 1-0.

The forthcoming statement from Dr Motsepe is expected to address the outcome and outline any implications for the tournament.

The CAF Appeal Board operates independently within the structure of African football’s governing organisation and is responsible for reviewing decisions and handling appeals on disciplinary and regulatory matters.

Its rulings can have significant consequences for competitions, member associations, and participating teams.

Dr Motsepe, who has led CAF since 2021, is expected to provide clarity on the situation in his statement. His remarks may shed light on the tribunal’s findings and any next steps CAF intends to take in response.

At present, CAF has not indicated the exact timing of the statement beyond confirming it will be released later today.

Mr September said: “The President of CAF Dr Patrice Motsepe will release a statement later today following the outcome/verdict issued by the Independent CAF Tribunal body – CAF Appeal Board in relation to the AFCON 2025.”
