CAF President Patrice Motsepe has conveyed his condolences following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea star Dominic Frimpong, who was killed during a robbery attack on his team’s bus in Ghana.
The 20-year-old winger lost his life after armed robbers attacked a bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea as they returned from a Premier League game against Samartex in Samreboi on Sunday.
The incident, which occurred along the Ahyiresu–KDS road, has sent shockwaves across Ghana’s football community.
In a letter addressed to the president of the Ghana Football Association Kurt Okraku, Motsepe expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and extended support to all affected.
“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the armed robbery attack on the bus of Berekum Chelsea… which claimed the life of 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong,” Motsepe wrote.
“Please pass my personal and CAF’s deepest condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Dominic Frimpong and to the Ghana Football Association. CAF is with you during this sad and painful period.”
Frimpong reportedly sustained fatal injuries during the attack and later died in hospital, while other members of the team escaped with their lives.
The incident has prompted investigations by the Ghana Police Service, who have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The tragedy has also reignited concerns over the safety of clubs travelling for domestic competitions, with calls growing for enhanced security measures to protect players and officials.
In recent years, clubs including FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities and AshantiGold have reportedly experienced similar attacks.
Earlier, the GFA described Frimpong’s death as a huge loss to Ghana football and pledged to review travel protocols in collaboration with relevant authorities.
Motsepe’s message adds to a growing wave of tributes from across the continent, as the football community continues to mourn a promising young talent whose life was cut short in tragic circumstances.
