Burkina Faso international Georgi Minoungou scored his first goal for Colorado Rapids as the American side were held to a dramatic draw by Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup.
The 23-year-old winger, who joined the Rapids from Seattle Sounders FC on 27 March 2026, is beginning to make his mark in North America, with his latest contribution underlining the growing influence of African players in Major League Soccer.
Minoungou found the net in extra time during a tense contest that ended 2-2 after 120 minutes, before being decided by a penalty shootout.
His goal, his first since arriving at the club, came at a crucial moment and briefly put the Rapids ahead in the closing stages of extra time.
The match itself was evenly contested from the outset. Colorado took the lead in the 25th minute through Alexis Manyoma, who finished from close range after a forward run and assist from Rafael Navarro.
However, the advantage was short-lived, as the Switchbacks responded in the 33rd minute when Brennan Creek scored from a corner to level the match.
Both teams continued to create opportunities throughout the first half, but neither side was able to add to the score before the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with end-to-end action and chances at both ends.
The Rapids faced an added challenge late in the game when Kosi Thompson was sent off in the 78th minute, leaving them with ten players.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the hosts maintained their attacking intent while remaining organised defensively to prevent the visitors from taking control.
With the score still level at the end of normal time, the match moved into extra time.
For much of the additional period, both sides struggled to find a breakthrough, but the decisive moment appeared to arrive in the 114th minute.
A move initiated by goalkeeper Nico Hansen saw the ball played forward to Rafael Navarro, who provided a headed assist into the path of Minoungou.
The Burkinabé winger capitalised on the opportunity, finishing the move to give Colorado a 2-1 lead and seemingly put them on course for victory.
However, the match took another twist in its closing moments.
The Switchbacks were awarded a penalty in the final minutes of extra time, which they converted to restore parity and force a shootout.
While the final outcome would be determined from the spot, Minoungou’s performance stood out as a key highlight for the Rapids.
Since his move to Colorado, he has now made seven MLS appearances and scored once, gradually adapting to his new environment.
Valued at approximately €1.5 million, the winger is seen as a developing talent with potential to grow further in the league.
His early contributions suggest he could play an important role for the Rapids as the season progresses.
