Veteran striker Bradley Grobler is set to join Stellenbosch FC on a one-year contract, reuniting with coach Gavin Hunt and moving within seven goals of becoming the PSL’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The 38-year-old has agreed to join the Cape Winelands club as a free agent, according to SABC Sport, after leaving Sekhukhune United at the end of last season.
Grobler had been linked with a move to Stellenbosch FC for several weeks following his departure from Sekhukhune United, but took time to consider his next step before committing to the Winelands-based outfit.
“SABC Sport can confirm that veteran striker Bradley Grobler is set to sign for Stellenbosch FC today after agreeing to join the Cape Winelands club on a free transfer,” reads part of the report.
The move will bring Grobler back together with Hunt, with whom he previously worked for several years at SuperSport United. The striker will now have the opportunity to play under the experienced coach again at Stellies.
Grobler spent last season on the books of Sekhukhune United. Although he made his best efforts during the campaign, the club decided to release him when the season ended.
His arrival at Stellenbosch FC also gives him a chance to challenge for a significant PSL goalscoring record.
Peter Shalulile currently holds the record for the most goals scored by a player in the league’s history, having found the net 134 times during his career in South Africa. Shalulile has since left the PSL to join Tanzanian giants Yanga SC.
Grobler has scored 128 PSL goals, leaving him one goal short of matching Siyabonga Nomvethe’s tally and six goals away from equalling Shalulile’s total. He would need seven goals at Stellenbosch FC to move beyond Shalulile and establish a new record.
Given his experience and previous record in front of goal, the former Bafana Bafana international could reach that mark during the current campaign.
The move will also provide Stellenbosch FC with a forward who has extensive experience of South African top-flight football, while giving Grobler another opportunity to work with Hunt after their time together at SuperSport United.
Stellenbosch FC have already been active in strengthening their squad, having unveiled a Kaizer Chiefs defender. The club has also welcomed a former Kaizer Chiefs striker, who was handed the number 10 jersey at his new club.
Grobler’s one-year agreement will see him continue his career at Stellenbosch FC while pursuing the chance to become the PSL’s leading goalscorer.
