Bologna eye Mangala as Lyon consider summer sales

Bologna have reportedly identified Lyon midfielder Orel Mangala as a potential transfer target as the Italian club prepares to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.

The Belgian international is among a number of players whose futures remain uncertain at Lyon, despite the club securing a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.

While Lyon’s financial position has improved compared to previous seasons, club officials have acknowledged that player sales will still be necessary as part of their summer strategy.

Mangala’s situation has attracted attention after a challenging campaign in France. The 28-year-old struggled for consistent game time following his return from a loan spell at Everton and was limited by injury problems throughout much of the season.

A serious knee injury delayed his involvement during the early stages of the campaign, but the midfielder gradually regained fitness and became a more regular option towards the end of the season.

He featured in several of Lyon’s final league matches as head coach Paulo Fonseca looked to reintegrate him into the squad after his lengthy recovery.

Despite his return to action, questions remain over whether Mangala will continue at the club beyond the summer transfer window.

Bologna are understood to be closely following developments and could make a move if Lyon decide to entertain offers.

The Italian side’s interest is reportedly influenced by head coach Domenico Tedesco, who worked with Mangala during his tenure with the Belgian national team and is familiar with the midfielder’s qualities.

Known for his physical presence, ball-winning ability and versatility in midfield, Mangala could provide valuable experience as Bologna seek to build a competitive squad for the upcoming campaign.

With Lyon expected to reshape parts of their squad and Bologna exploring reinforcements, the coming weeks could determine whether the Belgian midfielder embarks on a new challenge in Serie A.
