Black Queens strengthen WAFCON plans with four new call-ups

Four additional players have been invited to join the initial 22-member squad currently in camp with the Black Queens in Accra, as preparations continue to strengthen Ghana’s women’s national team ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The new call-ups include goalkeeper Osman Huzeima of Jonina Football Academy, Diana Amoako of Ampem Darkoa Ladies, and Mavis Owusu, who plays for Fomeget GSK. The group also features Portugal-based forward Louisa Animwaa of Valadares Gaia, who joins the camp following a strong season with her club side.

Their inclusion comes after a two-day assessment programme designed to evaluate additional talent capable of boosting the strength and depth of the national team setup. The screening process was overseen by Black Queens B coach Yusif Basigi, with observations also made by head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, as part of wider efforts to expand the player pool.

The Black Queens B programme was introduced in part to identify emerging players who could transition into the senior national team, and the latest call-ups underline the coaching staff’s continued focus on broadening competition within the squad. The assessment period, which took place over two days, formed a key part of the technical team’s evaluation strategy ahead of major upcoming international assignments.

The expanded squad will officially come together when the training camp begins on June 1 in Accra. The players are expected to report in the coming days as preparations intensify for the 2026 WAFCON tournament, where Ghana will be aiming to compete strongly on the continental stage.

The process also reflects ongoing efforts by the Ghana Football Association to ensure the Black Queens remain active and competitive in the lead-up to the tournament. Regular camping programmes and continuous monitoring of players, both locally and abroad, have been prioritised as part of a broader development strategy for the women’s national team.

With the FIFA women’s international window approaching, the latest additions will have the opportunity to integrate into the existing squad structure and impress the technical team during training sessions. The camp is expected to serve as a crucial platform for players to demonstrate their readiness for international competition and strengthen their case for inclusion in future selections.

For the coaching staff, the focus will now be on assessing how quickly the new arrivals adapt to the tactical demands and intensity of the national team environment. The blend of locally based talent and foreign-based experience is seen as an important factor in building a balanced and competitive squad capable of challenging at WAFCON 2026.

As preparations continue, the expanded group reflects a clear intention to deepen competition for places and ensure that only the most consistent performers are selected for Ghana’s continental campaign.
