Benin seal semi-final place in African Schools Championship

Benin have advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 African Schools Football Championship after earning a 1-1 draw against Tanzania in their final group match.

The result ensures the young Cheetahs finish second in Group B, sealing their place in the last four of the competition’s fourth edition. Their progression comes after a determined campaign in which the team showed steady improvement with each outing.

Benin’s qualification was confirmed in dramatic fashion, as they scored a late equaliser against Tanzania after initially falling behind. The timing of the goal proved decisive, allowing them to secure the point they needed to move forward in the tournament.

The team’s journey to the semi-finals began with a difficult game, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their opening match.

Despite the setback, the players responded strongly in their second fixture, producing a confident performance to defeat Zambia 2-0.

That victory not only revived their hopes but also demonstrated the team’s resilience and ability to adapt. Heading into their final group game against Tanzania, Benin required a positive result to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Tanzania took the lead during the match, putting pressure on the Beninese side as the clock ticked down. However, Benin continued to push forward in search of an equaliser, refusing to concede defeat.

Their persistence paid off in the closing stages of the game, when they found the net to level the score at 1-1. The late goal sparked celebrations among the players, as it ensured their progression to the semi-finals.

Throughout the group stage, Benin’s performances have reflected a team growing in confidence and cohesion. From the disappointment of their opening loss to the composure shown in their subsequent matches, the young squad has demonstrated both determination and tactical discipline.

Finishing second in Group B, Benin now look ahead to the semi-finals with momentum on their side. Their ability to recover from setbacks and deliver under pressure could prove crucial as they face tougher opposition in the next round.

The African Schools Football Championship continues to provide a platform for emerging talent across the continent, and Benin’s run to the semi-finals highlights the promise within their ranks.

With their place secured in the final four, attention now turns to whether they can continue their impressive progression and challenge for the title.
