RS Berkane forward Paul Valère Bassene could face disciplinary sanctions after Moroccan football authorities referred his case to the Central Disciplinary Committee following his controversial goal celebration against Raja Casablanca.
The National Professional Football League (LNFP) confirmed on Thursday that it had lodged a formal complaint against the Senegalese striker over his conduct after scoring the winning goal in RS Berkane’s Botola Pro victory over Raja Casablanca at the Mohammed V Stadium.
The incident, which occurred during a Matchday 22 fixture, quickly became a major talking point across Moroccan football, generating widespread debate among supporters and pundits.
In a statement, the league said the referral was part of its commitment to preserving discipline, respect and sporting values within domestic competitions.
The Central Disciplinary Committee will now review the incident and determine whether Bassene’s actions breached competition regulations and warrant punishment.
Bassene Apologises
The development comes after the 25-year-old publicly apologised for the celebration.
In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Bassene expressed regret to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, RS Berkane, Raja Casablanca and supporters who may have been offended by his actions.
The Senegalese forward insisted there was no intention to disrespect anyone and explained that his reaction was driven by emotion after scoring a decisive goal in a high-stakes encounter.
“I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for my celebration after scoring the goal in the match between RS Berkane and Raja Casablanca, which some considered excessive. I had absolutely no intention of offending anyone with my actions,” he wrote.
Bassene further explained that the gesture was intended to symbolise determination and fighting spirit rather than provoke opponents or supporters.
However, he acknowledged that the celebration had been interpreted differently and accepted responsibility for the controversy.
“Football is first and foremost a sport of respect, and I shouldn’t have let the excitement of the moment get the better of me in that way,” he added.
The striker concluded by reaffirming his commitment to fair play and promising to exercise greater restraint in future matches.
Despite the apology, the disciplinary process remains ongoing, with Moroccan football authorities expected to deliver a verdict after reviewing all available evidence.
