Azzedine Ounahi has completed a permanent move back to Panathinaikos, signing a contract with the Athens club until 2030 in a transfer worth €15m.
The 26-year-old Morocco international previously spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Panathinaikos while he was contracted to Olympique de Marseille. He has now returned to the Greek side on a permanent basis after a deal was agreed with Girona, the Spanish club he had joined more recently.
The full €15m transfer fee will be received directly by Girona. However, Olympique de Marseille will also benefit financially from the transaction because of an agreement included when Ounahi left the French club for Girona.
At the time of that initial sale, Marseille negotiated a clause entitling them to 30% of any profit made from a future resale. That arrangement means the Ligue 1 club is expected to receive approximately €2.7m from Ounahi’s move to Panathinaikos.
Ounahi had attracted considerable interest throughout the summer before deciding to return to Greece. According to exclusive sources cited by Africafoot, Ajax, PSV, FC Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid and Real Betis had all been monitoring the midfielder’s situation.
The Morocco international ultimately chose Panathinaikos, where his previous spell proved productive. During his first season with the club, Ounahi made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists.
His current valuation is reported to be €18m, although Panathinaikos have secured his services for a €15m fee paid to Girona. The new agreement keeps him in Athens until 2030 and marks a longer-term commitment from the Greek club after his successful loan campaign.
Ounahi, who was born in Casablanca, began his senior career with Angers before moving to Olympique de Marseille. His performances for Morocco also helped establish him as an international-level midfielder, and his club future had been the subject of significant attention during the summer.
Girona’s next fixture is away from the transfer market, with the club scheduled to face Sporting Gijon in the fourth round of Spain’s La Liga 2.
