Brazil manager Ancelotti says Estevao will remain under close observation even if he does not play a minute for Chelsea, as he builds a youthful squad for the next Copa America and World Cup.
Estevao has been recalled despite limited opportunities and unconvincing recent performances at Chelsea. Ancelotti said the 18-year-old would receive the support needed to show his ability.
“Our position on him is very clear: even if he doesn’t play a minute at Chelsea, we will continue to monitor and track him,” said Ancelotti.
“We will always track him until we believe he’s no longer useful to the national team. But as long as we believe he can contribute to the national team, we will definitely follow his progress and give him the opportunity to develop naturally, just as he needs to develop at Chelsea.”
Ancelotti was speaking at a news conference to announce Brazil’s latest squad, which contains nine players eligible for the Olympic age group and 15 under the age of 23.
He said the priority was not the differing technical standards of the opponents, but Brazil’s “rejuvenation and restructuring” and the identification of a new generation.
“We began evaluating young players from the September international break and will continue this process,” he said. “During this break, we will continue observing other young players who may belong to the national team in the future.”
The manager acknowledged that several selected players are not regulars for their clubs, but said international football has different aims.
“We must rebuild and, of course, play well and do our best to achieve what we need to do: win matches,” he said. “But at the same time, we must also support the development, progression, and improvement of young players.”
Ancelotti identified five players from the last World Cup cycle as the mainstay of the current side: Marquinhos, Gabriel, Guimaraes, Vinicius and Raphinha.
He also highlighted Douglas, who had “a very strong performance in the previous World Cup”, saying the group formed the backbone of the national team for future matches.
Domestic-club restrictions
Victor Caetano explained why the squad contains no players from Palmeiras or Flamengo, with the November international break overlapping the decisive closing stage of the Brasileirao.
The competition is run by the Brazilian Football Confederation, while its schedule includes matches the day after international fixtures. Caetano said the away commitments were especially demanding, so a limit of one player per Brazilian domestic club had been agreed, excluding the two clubs competing for the title.
All clubs with selected players were contacted and agreed to the arrangement. The two title contenders were not contacted because they have no players in the squad.
Caetano stressed that technical considerations came first and that only those two clubs were excluded for non-technical reasons. He added that the measure was a special exception, with the calendar set to improve from 2027, when no Brasileirao matches will be scheduled after an international break.
