Ayyoub Bouaddi set for Morocco World Cup squad after France snub

Ayyoub Bouaddi has reportedly decided to represent Morocco at international level, handing the Atlas Lions a major victory in one of the most closely followed dual-nationality battles in African football.

The highly-rated 18-year-old midfielder, currently starring for Lille OSC, had previously insisted he was in no rush to make a decision between Morocco and France, stressing that the choice “had to come from the heart.”

However, reports now indicate that Bouaddi has opted for Morocco after not appearing on Didier Deschamps’s latest plans for the French national team setup.

The decision is seen as a huge statement for Morocco, who continue to strengthen their squad through the recruitment of top dual-nationality talents ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bouaddi is regarded as one of the brightest young midfielders in European football and has attracted interest from several major clubs following his rapid rise at Lille. His composure, technical quality and maturity in midfield have made him one of the standout young players in Ligue 1.

The teenager had recently stated during a press conference with France’s second national team setup that he wanted more time before deciding his international future.

“I have not made my decision yet,” Bouaddi said at the time. “Choosing a national team is a major step in a player’s career. I want to give myself time.”

Despite those comments, the latest developments suggest the midfielder has now made his choice, with Morocco expected to include him in their plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For Morocco, landing Bouaddi represents another significant success in their long-term strategy of convincing elite dual-nationality players to commit to the national team. Since their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Atlas Lions have become an increasingly attractive destination for players eligible to represent multiple nations.

Bouaddi’s arrival would further strengthen a talented Moroccan midfield as the North Africans prepare for another ambitious World Cup campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
