Democratic Republic of Congo international Axel Tuanzebe has emerged as a potential target for Italian club Lazio, who are exploring the free-agent market as they look to strengthen their defence.
The 28-year-old centre-back is available after leaving Burnley, and Lazio’s sporting management reportedly view him as an attractive option to add experience and versatility to their squad.
The move would see Tuanzebe reunite with Italian football after previously spending time in Serie A during a loan spell with Napoli in the 2021-22 season.
Lazio, now led by former Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, are looking for defensive reinforcements and believe Tuanzebe’s profile could suit their plans. The Congolese defender is valued for his physical strength, pace and ability to compete in one-on-one situations.
A graduate of Manchester United’s academy, Tuanzebe developed through the club’s youth system before making his Premier League debut with the English giants. He later gained top-flight experience with Aston Villa, Stoke City and Burnley.
Although primarily a central defender, Tuanzebe’s ability to operate at right-back is considered an additional advantage. His capacity to cover multiple defensive roles is a quality that could appeal to Gattuso as he aims to build a more intense and reliable defensive unit.
The defender also has previous experience adapting to Italian football. During his time at Napoli, he joined the club on loan from Manchester United and gained exposure to Serie A’s tactical demands.
At international level, Tuanzebe represents DR Congo, having made 17 appearances for the Leopards. His experience with both club and country has increased his appeal to clubs searching for players who can contribute immediately.
Despite a reported market value of around €5 million, Lazio could potentially secure his services without paying a transfer fee because he is currently unattached.
The Italian club is not the only side monitoring the defender’s situation, with several European teams reportedly interested in taking advantage of his availability.
