Australia overpower Malawi in dominant FIFA series tie

The Malawi national women’s team, the Malawi Scorchers, endured a challenging start to their FIFA Series campaign with a comprehensive 5-0 defeat to Australia at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

Australia asserted control early in the match, taking the lead within six minutes after a swift attacking move exposed gaps in Malawi’s defence. The early breakthrough set the tone for much of the encounter, placing the Scorchers on the back foot from the outset.

Despite the setback, Malawi gradually found their rhythm as the first half progressed. The team began to push forward with greater intent, creating opportunities in search of an equaliser. Their most promising moment before the interval came from a free-kick by Rose Kabzere, which was saved, before Vanessa Chikupila’s follow-up effort was blocked.

However, just as Malawi looked to be gaining momentum, Australia struck again in the 41st minute to double their advantage. The second goal ensured the Australians went into half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Malawi continued to show determination. Chikupila attempted to reduce the deficit in the 53rd minute with a long-range effort, but her shot was dealt with comfortably by the Australian goalkeeper.

Australia, meanwhile, remained clinical in front of goal. They extended their lead in the 60th minute and added two further goals late in the match, scoring in the 86th minute and again in stoppage time at 90+2 minutes. The additional goals highlighted Malawi’s defensive vulnerabilities, which Australia exploited effectively throughout the game.

The result leaves the Scorchers with work to do as they look to regroup ahead of their next fixture. Malawi are now set to face India in the third-place play-off on Wednesday at the same venue in Nairobi, with kick-off scheduled for 13:00.

While the defeat marks a difficult opening to the tournament, Malawi showed moments of resilience and attacking promise that they will hope to build on in their upcoming match.
