Aubameyang returns ahead of schedule to set up Deportivo La Coruna winner

Five and a half weeks after undergoing surgery, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned for Deportivo La Coruna and helped create the winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

The 50th minute brought a major moment at Riazor as the stadium rose to applaud the striker, who had been warming up on the touchline. Wearing his familiar cheerful smile, Aubameyang appeared fully engaged with the action as he prepared to make his comeback.

His recovery had progressed faster than expected, beating even the most optimistic forecasts at a time when Deportivo La Coruna needed attacking help.

Aubameyang was initially expected to feature for only 10 minutes, but he was introduced with 20 minutes remaining. Understandably, he lacked his usual rhythm and had limited involvement in possession during his time on the pitch.

His influence, however, extended beyond the number of touches he made. The striker’s presence offered reassurance to his team-mates while demanding the attention of the opposition, something particularly valuable for a Deportivo La Coruna side short of attacking options.

As his energy began to dip, Aubameyang still managed to evade three defenders before rising to meet another excellent cross from Adama. He did not make the decisive contact himself, but his movement and the attention he attracted created the opening for Bil Nsongo.

With defenders focused on Aubameyang, Nsongo was left unmarked and took advantage to score the winner and complete the 2-1 result.

Aubameyang’s return therefore produced an immediate contribution, even though he did not get on the scoresheet. For Deportivo La Coruna, his goals remain important, but his leadership and presence are considered even more difficult to replace.
