Aubameyang arrives in Deportivo La Coruña for new chapter

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has completed a move from Olympique de Marseille to newly promoted La Liga side Deportivo La Coruña, bringing his spell in French football to an end.

The Gabon international has signed a two-year contract with the Spanish club that will keep him at Deportivo until June 2028.

According to Foot Mercato, the transfer was completed for €1.5 million, matching the release clause in Aubameyang’s contract with Marseille. The French club will therefore receive €1.5 million from the deal.

Marseille confirmed the transfer in an official statement, saying: “Olympique de Marseille announces the transfer of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Deportivo La Coruña.”

The Ligue 1 club added: “The club thanks Aubameyang and wishes him success in the rest of his career.”

The move sees the 37-year-old return to Spanish football after previously playing in La Liga during the 2021-22 season.

Deportivo, who have secured promotion to Spain’s top flight, believe the experienced striker can make an important contribution as they prepare for their return to the division.

Announcing the signing, the Galician club highlighted Aubameyang’s recent performances and the qualities they expect him to bring to the squad.

In a statement, Deportivo said: “Deportivo welcomes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The striker arrives from Olympique de Marseille after a brilliant season: 30 matches, 10 goals, and 6 assists in Ligue 1. With his arrival, we add a world-class player with tremendous experience and leadership to strengthen our sporting project.”

Aubameyang leaves Marseille after a campaign in which he featured in 30 Ligue 1 matches.

During that season, the Gabonese forward scored 10 league goals and also provided six assists, contributing both goals and creativity for the French club.

His performances have now earned him a move to Deportivo, where he is expected to play a leading role as the newly promoted side prepares for life back in Spain’s top division.

The transfer also marks a return to familiar surroundings for Aubameyang.

The striker previously represented Barcelona during the 2021-22 campaign, where he made a notable impression during his spell in Spanish football.

His latest move gives him another opportunity to compete in La Liga, this time with Deportivo as the club seeks to establish itself following promotion.

Deportivo’s decision to recruit the experienced forward reflects its intention to strengthen the squad with proven quality ahead of the new season.

The club believes Aubameyang’s experience, leadership and ability in front of goal will provide an important boost over the next two years.

For Marseille, the transfer closes the chapter on Aubameyang’s time at the club, while providing a transfer fee equivalent to the player’s release clause.

For the Gabonese international, it represents the beginning of a fresh challenge in Spain, where he will look to use his experience and attacking qualities to help Deportivo compete in La Liga.

With a two-year contract now in place, Aubameyang is set to become one of Deportivo’s most experienced players as the club begins its latest campaign in the Spanish top flight after securing promotion.
