Arrows captain fires stern warning ahead of Pirates test

Captain of Golden Arrows Nduduzo Sibiya has described the formidable challenge awaiting his side at the Orlando Amstel Arena, as they prepare to face Orlando Pirates later on Tuesday.

The KwaZulu-Natal-based club head into the fixture with a poor record at the venue, having last secured victory there more than a decade ago. That win, an emphatic 2-0 result, came 11 years ago when Kudakwashe Mahachi and Gladwin Shitolo found the net.

Since then, Golden Arrows have struggled to replicate that success. In their subsequent 10 visits, they have suffered five defeats and recorded five goalless draws. Over that period, the team has scored just six goals while conceding 18, underlining the scale of the task they face.

Speaking ahead of the match, Sibiya pointed to both the physical and psychological challenges posed by the stadium environment. In an interview with Up Back Through Podcast, he highlighted how conditions at the ground differ significantly from other venues.

“I think when you play at Orlando [stadium] it’s not like the other stadiums, even if you go there fit when you get it’s like you didn’t train,” Sibiya told Up Back Through Podcast.

His comments reflect a broader concern within the squad about their ability to cope with the intensity of the occasion. The captain suggested that even well-prepared players can struggle to perform at their usual level once inside the stadium.

“There are slim chances of winning in Orlando [stadium]. Orlando [stadium] is heavy no matter how fit you are, you just look like you didn’t train,” he said.

Beyond the physical demands, Sibiya also emphasised the influence of the home support. Orlando Pirates are known for attracting large crowds, and their fans are expected to play a significant role in shaping the atmosphere during the match.

“They are used to it, so they use it at their advantage. The fans are playing a huge role because they pack the stadium, once they score first it’s tough for you to bounce back,” he added.

For Golden Arrows, the encounter represents not only an opportunity to improve their record at a challenging venue but also a test of their resilience against one of the league’s most established sides. However, both history and the intimidating environment suggest they face a difficult evening.

As kick-off approaches, attention will focus on whether Arrows can overcome past struggles and silence a notoriously vocal crowd, or whether Orlando Pirates will once again make their home advantage count.
