Anthony Mandrea has found himself at the centre of speculation after appearing in Algeria during the national team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although his visit is reportedly unrelated to the Desert Foxes’ training camp.
The goalkeeper, who plays for SM Caen, sparked discussion among supporters after sharing photographs from Algiers on social media. His presence in the country quickly led to suggestions that he had joined coach Vladimir Petković and the national team squad as preparations continue for the tournament.
However, reports indicate that Mandrea’s stay in Algeria is strictly personal and has no connection to the national team’s ongoing training camp at Sidi Moussa.
The 28-year-old has been sidelined for an extended period due to a shoulder injury and was not included in Petković’s plans for the current gathering, which began on May 25 as Algeria intensified preparations for the World Cup.
Despite speculation among fans about a possible return to the squad, the coaching staff have continued working with the goalkeepers selected for the camp.
Five goalkeepers were called up for the current phase of preparations, including Alexis Guendouz, Oussama Benbot, Mastil, Ramdane and Belazzoug.
Competition for places remains fierce, with the coaching staff expected to reduce the goalkeeping group before the next stage of preparations. Reports suggest Belazzoug could be the player to make way as the squad is refined.
Meanwhile, one of the reserve goalkeepers is expected to travel to Kansas City on June 7 as preparations continue ahead of the tournament.
For now, Mandrea’s appearance in Algeria carries no sporting significance despite the attention it generated online. While he remains in the country, the goalkeeper is not involved in training activities and is not currently part of Algeria’s World Cup plans as the Desert Foxes continue their build-up to the global tournament.
