Al-Merreikh overcome pressure and rivals to launch title charge

Al-Merreikh began the decisive stage of the Sudanese Premier League in emphatic fashion after defeating Al-Ahli Madani 3-1 in the opening round of the Elite League competition.

The victory, regarded as one of the standout results of the first round, handed the “Red Club” an important early advantage in the final stage of the league’s 30th edition. Beyond the three points, the performance also helped ease growing concerns surrounding the team’s recent struggles, the inexperience of several players in the squad, and the mounting pressure on coach Darko Novic.

For Al-Merreikh supporters, the result represented more than just a successful opening fixture. It signalled what many hope could be the return of one of Sudan’s traditional giants after several difficult seasons marked by inconsistency and decline.

Strong Response to Early Concerns

There had been widespread anxiety among fans ahead of the start of the competition, particularly because the club had previously struggled in opening league matches. Questions were also raised about whether the newly assembled squad would be capable of handling the pressure of competing for the title.

However, Al-Merreikh quickly answered those doubts with an assured display against one of the teams expected to challenge for the championship.

The club’s recent improvement had already been visible during its participation in the Rwandan league, where it produced a series of strong performances. That momentum now appears to have carried into the Elite League campaign, with the convincing win strengthening belief that the team is regaining its competitive edge.

Victory Over a Major Title Contender

The significance of the result was heightened by the stature of the opposition. Al-Ahli Madani entered the competition as one of the strongest candidates for the title and was widely viewed as the second most dangerous competitor in the tournament.

The club from Wad Madani, often referred to by its supporters as the “Master of Teams,” has enjoyed strong financial backing and invested heavily in its squad. Under coach Farouk Jabra, considered among the most respected local managers in recent years, the team strengthened its ranks with experienced domestic players and foreign professionals.

Al-Ahli Madani had also begun preparations for the competition early, increasing expectations around the side ahead of the tournament.

Despite those factors, Al-Merreikh managed to overcome what many considered one of the most difficult obstacles in the race to reclaim the league title.

Relief for Coach Darko Novic

The victory also provided a major boost for coach Darko Novic, who had faced heavy criticism in recent months.

By securing a convincing opening win, the 55-year-old coach eased pressure on himself and his players while restoring confidence among supporters. The result reinforced Al-Merreikh’s historical dominance over Al-Ahli and provided a psychological advantage heading into the next round of fixtures.

The team’s attacking form has also improved significantly. Al-Merreikh have now scored nine goals across their last three matches, while maintaining impressive defensive solidity. Their defensive record has even been regarded as the strongest in the Rwandan league during their recent run.

Fans Provide Crucial Support

Led by captain Ahmed Abdel Moneim, the team is also expected to benefit from increasing support in the coming matches.

Supporters turned out in large numbers for the opening fixture despite difficult economic conditions, expensive ticket prices and intense afternoon heat during the summer season. Their early arrival and strong backing created an atmosphere that players are expected to draw confidence from throughout the remainder of the competition.

With expectations rising once again, Al-Merreikh’s strong start has not only delivered three valuable points, but also renewed optimism that the club could be preparing for a sustained return to the top of Sudanese football.
