Al-Hilal Omdurman launched their defence of the Sudanese league title in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 victory over Al-Falah Atbara in the opening round of the Sudan Elite League’s final phase.
The match, played on Saturday, May 16, at the Sports City Stadium in Kober, saw the reigning champions produce an impressive attacking performance to underline their ambitions of retaining the title. The result also served as an early warning to their domestic rivals as the “Blue Wave” began the decisive stage of the Premier League campaign with authority.
Al-Hilal quickly imposed themselves on the contest, dominating possession and pinning Al-Falah deep inside their own half for long periods. The defending champions relied heavily on the pace of John Claude and Ahmed Salem Mubarak, while playmaker Abdul Raouf Yaqoub orchestrated attacks with a series of accurate passes and creative movement.
Despite their control, Al-Hilal initially struggled to convert several clear opportunities. Al-Falah defended in numbers and attempted to absorb the pressure, but the breakthrough eventually arrived late in the first half through captain Mohamed Abdel Rahman.
The goal eased the tension for coach Laurențiu Reghecampf and his players after a succession of missed chances, and the first half ended with Al-Hilal holding a narrow 1-0 advantage.
The champions resumed the second half with the same attacking intensity and doubled their lead shortly after the restart. Ahmed Salem Mubarak capitalised on a defensive mistake from Al-Falah’s goalkeeper to score the second goal, giving Al-Hilal greater confidence and complete control of the match.
Substitutes then added further damage to Al-Falah’s hopes of recovery. Sunday Odtonje came off the bench to score Al-Hilal’s third goal before Yasser Awad completed the rout with a well-taken strike in the closing stages.
The comprehensive victory earned Al-Hilal their first three points of the Elite League campaign and reinforced expectations that they will again be among the strongest contenders for the championship.
The evening also carried personal significance for captain Mohamed Abdel Rahman, widely known among supporters as “Gharbal”. His opening goal moved him onto 118 league goals, drawing level with former Al-Merrikh SC captain Faisal Agab in second place on the Sudanese league’s all-time scoring chart.
The milestone places the Al-Hilal forward within touching distance of taking sole possession of second place among the league’s greatest goalscorers, further strengthening his status as one of Sudanese football’s leading figures.
Al-Hilal will now turn their attention to their next Elite League fixture against Hay Al-Wadi Nyala, scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, at the Sports City Stadium in Kober.
Following such a commanding opening display, confidence inside the Al-Hilal camp is expected to be high as the club seeks to continue its strong start and move one step closer to retaining the Sudanese league crown.
