Al Ahly linked with former Sevilla coach as agent denies contact

Al Ahly SC have not made contact with former Sevilla FC coach Matias Almeyda despite growing speculation linking the Argentine with the club’s managerial position, according to the coach’s representative.

Questions continue to surround the future of Al Ahly’s current manager, Jess Torup, after a series of disappointing results this season increased pressure on the Egyptian side ahead of the next campaign.

Reports in recent days suggested that Almeyda had emerged as one of the leading candidates to take charge at Al Ahly, with claims that discussions had already taken place between the two parties.

However, Almeyda’s agent, Santiago Herceg, dismissed those reports in comments made to WinWin.

“There has been absolutely no contact with us from Al Ahly Club.”

Herceg also revealed that the Argentine coach is currently attracting attention from clubs in several countries following his recent departure from Sevilla.

“Currently we have other offers, as several clubs have contacted us, two from Saudi Arabia, some European clubs, and two from Mexico as well.”

The comments appear to contradict widespread speculation in Egyptian media regarding Al Ahly’s search for a new technical director ahead of next season.

Al Ahly are reportedly considering different options regarding Torup’s future, with discussions centred on whether to end his tenure immediately after the upcoming match against Al Masry SC or wait until the end of June before terminating his contract.

According to reports, the club are also exploring a financial settlement that would provide the Danish coach with the equivalent of three months’ salary as part of an exit agreement.

When asked about the possibility of Almeyda coaching in Egypt in the future, Herceg stopped short of ruling out the idea but insisted no discussions had yet taken place.

“I don’t know, we haven’t received any direct contact from any club. I will have to assess the matter later if that happens, but only if a club contacts us directly.”

Almeyda recently left Sevilla after a difficult spell in Spain. The Argentine took charge of the Andalusian club in the summer of 2025 and oversaw 32 official matches during his tenure, including 29 in La Liga and three in the Copa del Rey.

His time at Sevilla came during a challenging period for the club, with the team battling to avoid relegation from the Spanish top flight. Although results improved in recent weeks, helping Sevilla climb to 12th place in the standings, the club’s hierarchy ultimately decided to part ways with the coach.

The uncertainty surrounding Al Ahly’s managerial situation comes at a crucial stage for the Cairo-based club, which is seeking stability and stronger performances after an underwhelming campaign.

While Almeyda’s name has featured prominently in speculation over the vacancy, his agent’s comments indicate that no formal approach has yet been made. For now, the focus remains on Al Ahly’s next move regarding Torup and whether the club will accelerate plans for a managerial change before the end of the season.
