Jorthy Mokio has opted to represent DR Congo national football team at international level, despite previously featuring for Belgium’s youth sides.
The 18-year-old midfielder, who was born in Belgium but is of Congolese descent, has formally committed his future to DR Congo in a move that could strengthen the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mokio had progressed through Belgium’s youth system, where he gained recognition as one of the most promising players in his position due to his technical ability, composure and tactical awareness.
However, he has now chosen to switch allegiance and represent the country of his heritage on the international stage.
The decision comes just weeks before the World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the expanded tournament expected to feature 48 teams.
Mokio is understood to be in contention for inclusion in the squad being assembled by head coach Sébastien Desabre, who is working to build a competitive side capable of making an impact at the tournament.
At club level, Mokio is part of AFC Ajax, an organisation widely recognised for developing young players through its academy system. His progress has attracted attention across Europe, with expectations that he could soon establish himself in senior football.
