Gorthi Mokuo has pledged his international future to DR Congo national football team, opting to represent the African nation instead of Belgium ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who plays for AFC Ajax, has made the decision as preparations intensify for the global tournament.
Mokuo, born in Belgium to Congolese parents, had previously featured for Belgium at youth level, earning six caps and scoring twice for the Under-21 side.
However, he has now chosen to switch allegiance and represent DR Congo, a move that could strengthen the Leopards’ squad ahead of the tournament.
The decision comes at a time of growing optimism within the Congolese camp following qualification for the World Cup.
DR Congo secured their place via the intercontinental play-offs, defeating Bolivia national football team in a decisive encounter.
They have been drawn into a challenging group, where they will face Portugal national football team, Colombia national football team and Uzbekistan national football team.
Mokuo’s rise at club level has been rapid. After starting his development at KAA Gent, he joined Ajax’s academy in 2024 and broke into the first team within a year.
This season, he has made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing three assists.
Known for his composure and tactical awareness, the midfielder is capable of controlling play from deep while also contributing in attack.
His skill set is expected to add balance and depth to the DR Congo squad as they prepare for the tournament.
The move also reflects a broader trend of dual-national players choosing to represent African nations, strengthening teams across the continent.
For DR Congo, securing Mokuo’s commitment represents both an immediate boost and a long-term investment in the team’s future.
With the World Cup approaching, the midfielder now has the opportunity to establish himself on the international stage and play a role in shaping the next chapter of Congolese football.
