Former Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Touré has been appointed head coach of Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava, marking the first time the four-time African Footballer of the Year has taken charge of a club as a senior manager.
The 43-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Slovakia’s most successful club and will be tasked with leading the reigning league champions into a new era following the departure of long-serving coach Vladimir Weiss.
For African football supporters, the appointment represents another significant milestone in the post-playing career of one of the continent’s most decorated footballers.
After establishing himself as one of Africa’s greatest-ever midfielders, Touré now faces the challenge of proving himself from the dugout.
Slovan Bratislava confirmed the appointment, with the club’s management placing its faith in Touré to guide the team domestically and in Europe.
The former Manchester City and Barcelona star replaces Vladimir Weiss, who has recently been appointed head coach of the Slovakia national team.
Touré’s arrival comes with considerable expectations. Slovan Bratislava are record 32-time Slovak champions and will be looking to maintain their dominance at home while also making progress in European competition.
His immediate focus will be preparing the club for its UEFA Champions League campaign, while ensuring Slovan remain the leading force in Slovak football.
The Ivorian will not be working alone. Former Celtic defender Darren O’Dea has been named as part of his coaching staff as Touré begins his first full managerial assignment.
Although this is his first role as a head coach, Touré has spent recent years building coaching experience after ending his playing career.
He worked within the Tottenham Hotspur Academy setup and later served as an assistant coach under Roberto Mancini with the Saudi Arabian national team.
Those roles allowed him to gain valuable experience before stepping into the spotlight as a manager in his own right.
Touré’s transition into management has been closely followed across Africa, where he remains one of the most respected figures in football.
During a glittering playing career, he enjoyed success at the highest level of the game.
His spells with Barcelona and Manchester City helped establish him as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, while his achievements with Ivory Coast cemented his status as an African football icon.
Slovan Bratislava’s leadership believes those experiences can help drive the club forward.
“First and foremost, I am very pleased that Yaya Touré is our new head coach. I am delighted that we have agreed on a three-year contract with him and that, starting Monday, we will begin building a new era for Slovan Bratislava together.
“Of course, I was aware all along that it would not be easy to replace coach Weiss. From the start, I had a clear idea and vision of the direction Slovan should take. My goal was to bring in someone with the experience of the highest level of world soccer”
For Touré, the appointment opens a new chapter in a football journey that has already inspired countless young African players.
Now, after conquering the game as a player, the former Ivory Coast star will attempt to make his mark as a manager, beginning with one of Eastern Europe’s most successful clubs.
