Jonas Adjei Adjetey and VfL Wolfsburg have failed to retain their Bundesliga status after losing 2-1 in extra time to SC Paderborn 07 in the decisive promotion and relegation playoff match.
The result at the Home Deluxe Arena secured promotion for Paderborn and condemned Wolfsburg to relegation following a tightly contested two-legged tie.
Adjetey, one of Ghana’s emerging defensive prospects abroad, remained an unused substitute throughout the second leg as Wolfsburg’s hopes of survival ended in disappointment.
The playoff had been delicately balanced after the opening match at the Volkswagen Arena finished goalless, leaving both teams level heading into the return fixture.
Wolfsburg made the stronger start and moved ahead within the opening minutes through Dženan Pejčinović, whose third-minute goal appeared to put the visitors in control of the tie.
However, Paderborn responded before the interval and restored parity through Filip Bilbija in the 38th minute, ensuring the contest remained finely poised.
With neither side able to find another breakthrough during normal time, the match progressed into extra time, where the hosts eventually secured the decisive moment.
Laurin Curda scored the winning goal to complete Paderborn’s comeback and confirm the club’s return to the Bundesliga for next season.
The victory capped a dramatic evening for the home side, who overturned Wolfsburg’s early advantage to secure promotion in front of their supporters.
Paderborn will now join FC Schalke 04 and SV Elversberg in next season’s Bundesliga campaign.
For Wolfsburg, the defeat marked a bitter end to the season after the club failed to preserve its place in Germany’s top division through the playoff route.
Although Adjetey did not feature in the decisive encounter, the Ghanaian defender continues to be regarded as one of the country’s promising young players based in Europe.
The setback is unlikely to diminish expectations surrounding the defender’s future prospects, with the player still viewed as a potential contender for inclusion in the Ghana national football team squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The playoff defeat nevertheless concludes a difficult campaign for Wolfsburg, who were unable to recover after surrendering their early lead in the second leg.
Paderborn, by contrast, now prepare for life back among Germany’s elite after sealing promotion through a dramatic extra-time triumph.
