Sevilla secured a valuable 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday, a result that could prove decisive in their fight to avoid relegation this season.
An early goal from Nigerian forward Akor Adams set Sevilla on their way, as the home side ended a five-match run without a win in La Liga. The result lifts them three points clear of the relegation zone, offering renewed hope as the campaign enters its final stretch.
Adams opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the match, converting from the penalty spot after a foul in the box by defender Dani Martinez. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot, and the striker made no mistake, confidently striking the ball into the net to give Sevilla the lead.
The early advantage allowed Sevilla to settle into the game, but Atletico Madrid responded midway through the first half. In the 25th minute, Javier Boñar marked his debut with a goal, bringing the visitors level and briefly shifting momentum in their favour.
Despite the setback, Sevilla regained control before the interval. Nemanja Gudelj restored their lead just before half-time, heading home to make it 2-1 and ensure the hosts went into the break in front.
The second half proved to be a more subdued affair, with clear chances at a premium. Sevilla focused on maintaining their advantage, while Atletico Madrid struggled to create meaningful opportunities in attack.
Ademola Lookman was introduced in the 71st minute in an attempt to inject fresh energy into the contest, but the substitution had little impact on the overall flow of the game. Sevilla remained organised defensively and were able to contain Atletico’s efforts as the match progressed.
As the final whistle approached, the home side showed composure and discipline to see out the result, securing all three points in a tightly contested encounter.
The victory moves Sevilla up to 15th place in the table with 34 points from 31 matches, creating a small but significant cushion above the relegation zone. For Atletico Madrid, the defeat leaves them in fourth place on 57 points, missing an opportunity to strengthen their position in the race for European qualification.
Sevilla’s win not only ends a difficult run of form but also provides a timely boost in confidence as they look to steer clear of danger in the closing weeks of the season.
