Aboubakary Koita makes history as first Mauritanian to score in Champions League

Aboubakary Koita became the first Mauritanian player to score in the UEFA Champions League when he found the net for AEK Athens against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The forward struck in the 12th minute of the fourth matchday of the league phase, giving AEK Athens an early lead against the Spanish giants and creating a landmark moment for Mauritanian football.

Koita’s goal was significant beyond its impact on the match. No player from Mauritania had previously scored in the competition, meaning the AEK Athens attacker has become the first to achieve that feat and secured his place in the country’s football history.

Real Madrid fight back

Despite taking the lead and moving in front twice during the game, AEK Athens were unable to hold on against a Real Madrid side that eventually turned the match around.

Real Madrid’s experience and attacking quality proved decisive as they completed a 3-2 victory. The result denied Koita’s side a positive outcome, but did not diminish the importance of his contribution.

For Koita, the evening represented a major personal milestone. His goal came against one of European football’s most prominent clubs and ensured the occasion would be remembered by supporters in Mauritania, despite AEK Athens ending the match empty-handed.

Scoring in the UEFA Champions League is a notable achievement in itself, with the competition bringing together leading clubs and players from across the continent. Doing so against Real Madrid gave Koita’s record-breaking moment added significance.

His finish has therefore given Mauritanian football its first Champions League goal and established a new landmark on the European stage. While AEK Athens were beaten, Koita’s historic strike will remain one of the defining moments of the fourth matchday.
