Achraf Hakimi one assist away from Samuel Eto’o’s Champions League record

Achraf Hakimi has moved to within one assist of Samuel Eto’o’s African record in the Champions League after helping Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 last Tuesday.

The Morocco international provided the final pass for one of PSG’s goals, taking his overall tally in the competition to 19 assists. That places him joint third among African players alongside Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, who has not been registered in this season’s competition with Trabzonspor.

Hakimi, who turns 28 in November, now needs only one more assist to draw level with former Cameroon striker Eto’o, the record holder with 20. The Paris Saint-Germain right-back could overtake that mark during the current season.

The latest milestone adds to a growing list of achievements for Hakimi, who is enjoying an outstanding period with both his club and the Morocco national team. He has won 103 international caps and scored 12 goals for his country.

His pursuit of Eto’o’s records is not a new development. On 30 May, Hakimi matched the Cameroon legend’s record for Champions League titles by becoming the African player with the most final victories in the competition, with three.

Hakimi won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2018 before adding two further titles with Paris Saint-Germain in 2025 and 2026. Eto’o claimed the trophy twice with Barcelona, in 2006 and 2009, before winning it again with Inter Milan in 2010.

Hakimi has also established himself, with some qualifications, as the most decorated African player in football history, having collected 19 trophies.

His latest assist against Barcelona therefore carried significance beyond PSG’s 4-2 victory. It placed him level with Salah in the assists standings and left him one behind Eto’o, giving him the opportunity to move to the top of the list during the same campaign in which he is already pursuing further honours with club and country.
