Algeria’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have encountered a fresh setback after delays emerged in arranging the national team’s final friendly match in the United States ahead of their opening fixture against reigning world champions Argentina.
The Algerian national team is still attempting to finalise the identity of the second opponent it will face during its pre-World Cup training programme, with negotiations complicated by organisational disagreements and logistical issues linked to visa procedures.
The “Greens” are expected to hold a two-stage training camp before the tournament begins. The first phase will start in Algeria before moving to the Netherlands and then returning briefly to Algeria. The second phase of preparations will take place in Kansas City in the United States, which will serve as the team’s official base during the World Cup.
As part of those plans, Algeria are already scheduled to face the Netherlands on 3 June at De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam. The fixture was reportedly requested by head coach Vladimir Petkovic, who wants his players tested against elite opposition before the tournament.
However, the North African side is still waiting to confirm a second and final warm-up game, which is expected to take place on 10 June, only days before Algeria open their World Cup campaign against Argentina national football team.
Venezuela and Bolivia Consider Algeria Proposal
A source told WinWin that the Algerian Football Federation has approached both the Venezuelan and Bolivian football federations in an attempt to secure the final friendly fixture.
According to the same source, official contract copies for the proposed match were sent to both federations on Sunday, 10 May. Algeria are now expected to play whichever team responds first in order to avoid further delays and allow organisers to complete the remaining logistical arrangements.
But discussions with several Latin American federations have reportedly become difficult because many of them have refused to negotiate directly with Algerian officials. Instead, they are said to prefer conducting talks through private agencies or intermediaries specialising in arranging international friendlies.
The issue has become a significant obstacle for Algeria’s football authorities, who are eager to conclude preparations quickly before the World Cup begins.
Algerian Officials Reject Certain Financial Practices
The report added that some Latin American federations often rely on intermediaries in search of larger financial returns from friendly matches involving World Cup participants.
Because nations preparing for the tournament are usually under pressure to secure suitable opposition, negotiations can quickly become competitive and financially demanding. In some situations, officials reportedly viewed the process as excessive and unacceptable.
Officials within the Algerian Football Federation are understood to have rejected such practices, leading to further delays in reaching agreements.
At the same time, Algeria have also turned down proposals to face additional top-tier opponents. Coach Vladimir Petkovic reportedly preferred a balanced preparation schedule consisting of one high-level match against the Netherlands and another fixture against a less demanding side.
That strategy mirrors a common approach used by national teams before major international tournaments, allowing players to experience both elite competition and controlled tactical preparation.
Algeria Eye Another Historic World Cup Run
Algeria have been drawn in Group 10 of the 2026 World Cup alongside Argentina, Jordan and Austria.
The Desert Warriors will aim to repeat, or even surpass, their memorable run at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where they reached the round of 16 before losing 2-1 after extra time to eventual champions Germany national football team.
