El Ouahdi targets World Cup spot after Ebony Shoe triumph

Moroccan defender Zakaria El Ouahdi says he is determined to secure a place in the Atlas Lions squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being named the best African player in the Belgian Pro League.

The 24-year-old, who plays for K.R.C. Genk, recently won the prestigious Ebony Shoe, an award presented annually to the top African performer in Belgium’s top flight. The recognition marks a significant milestone in his career and could strengthen his chances of earning a call-up to the Morocco national team.

Speaking after receiving the award, El Ouahdi underlined his ambition to represent his country on football’s biggest stage.

“I think about the World cup every day since it is everyone’s dream. I wish to be a part of the Moroccan National Team, and I’ll do the best I can to be present there,” El Ouahdi said in a statement after winning the award.

El Ouahdi has enjoyed an impressive season with Genk, emerging as a key figure in the team. Operating as a right-back, he has contributed 12 goals and five assists in 41 appearances, highlighting his attacking influence as well as his defensive role.

His performances have placed him among the standout players in the Belgian Pro League this season, drawing attention as competition intensifies for places in Morocco’s World Cup squad.

The defender also pointed to Achraf Hakimi as a major influence on his development, describing the Paris Saint-Germain full-back as a source of inspiration.

“I follow Achraf closely and he serves as an inspiration to me,” he said. “I am honored to win this award and to be among the big names that have already won this prize, such as Mbark Boussoufa, and Romelu Lukaku.”

By winning the Ebony Shoe, El Ouahdi becomes only the third Moroccan to claim the honour, following Mbark Boussoufa and Tarik Tissoudali. The achievement further enhances his growing reputation in European football.

It also adds to previous recognition he received last year, when he was awarded the Belgian Lion prize, given to players of North African descent in the Belgian top division.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, El Ouahdi’s form and confidence come at a crucial time. His recent performances and individual accolades may strengthen his case as he looks to turn his ambition into selection for Morocco’s squad.
