Mahrez under scrutiny as Saudi authorities investigate match incidents

Riyad Mahrez could face disciplinary action after the Saudi Arabian Football Federation opened an investigation into incidents surrounding Al Nassr’s 2-0 win over Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

The federation’s disciplinary committee is examining events linked to the round 30 fixture, which has drawn significant attention following confrontations during and after the match, as well as public comments from several players.

According to reports, the inquiry covers a range of incidents, including altercations involving players from both teams and statements made by Mahrez, Merih Demiral and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The committee is also reviewing content posted by Al Nassr’s official account on the social media platform X, assessing whether any communications breached competition rules or regulatory guidelines.

Tensions are understood to have escalated throughout the match and continued after the final whistle, prompting authorities to gather evidence and testimonies from those involved.

Fan behaviour has emerged as a key focus of the investigation, with reports indicating that projectiles were thrown by supporters from both sides during and after the game.

These objects are said to have been directed at players as well as coaching and administrative staff, raising safety concerns and adding to the seriousness of the case.

Both clubs have submitted formal complaints regarding the incidents, which are expected to form part of the disciplinary committee’s review as it seeks to establish responsibility.

Mahrez has become one of the central figures in the case, with his comments now under scrutiny as part of the wider investigation.

The Algeria international, who captains his national team, could face sanctions depending on the outcome, although authorities have not yet indicated the nature of any potential penalties.

The case also places additional focus on Ronaldo and Demiral, whose remarks are being assessed alongside those of Mahrez.

Despite the controversy, the result on the pitch saw Al Nassr strengthen their position at the top of the Saudi Pro League table.

They now lead with 79 points, maintaining an advantage over their closest challengers as the season nears its conclusion.

Al Ahli remain third on 66 points with a game in hand, having recently enjoyed success in continental competition.

As the investigation continues, the outcome could have implications not only for the individuals involved but also for the clubs, with Saudi football authorities seeking to uphold discipline and standards within the league.
