Patrick Vieira says the intense passion surrounding Senegal’s national team is both a strength and a source of pressure as he begins his tenure with the Lions of Teranga.
The former France international has quickly experienced the high expectations that come with managing one of Africa’s most ambitious national teams, with supporters demanding strong performances and results.
Vieira says the enthusiasm around the team reflects the country’s desire to see Senegal succeed, although he acknowledges that the constant scrutiny can also make his job more difficult.
“I am a coach, I have ambitious players and an ambitious country. Senegal’s strength, which can also be a weakness, is that there are 22 million coaches. But it is also proof of passion. Senegalese people want to see their national team go as far as possible,” said the French coach.
The source also carries another version of Vieira’s comments, which reads:
“I am a coach, I have ambitious players and an ambitious country. Senegal’s strength, which can also be a weakness, is that there are 19 million coaches. But it’s also proof of passion.”
Vieira’s comments underline the level of attention surrounding the national team as he attempts to establish his own approach.
Senegal are among the continent’s leading football nations and have won the Africa Cup of Nations twice, in 2022 and 2025.
That success has helped raise expectations around the Lions, with performances, team selection and results all attracting significant public interest.
Rather than viewing that pressure solely as a problem, Vieira believes it can also provide motivation for his players and coaching staff.
His immediate task is to build on Senegal’s start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign while developing a new playing approach.
Vieira took charge of Senegal on 25 September 2026 and began his competitive tenure with an away trip to Mozambique.
The Lions took the lead through Nicolas Jackson, but Mozambique equalised shortly before half-time through Geny Catamo. The match ended 1-1, giving Vieira a point from his first game in charge.
Four days later, Senegal recorded their first victory under their new coach by beating Ethiopia 1-0.
The two matches have given Vieira four points from a possible six, providing a positive foundation despite the draw in Mozambique leaving some disappointment because of Senegal’s dominance.
Vieira believes there are still aspects of the team’s performance that require improvement, even though the early results have been encouraging.
“From a points perspective, taking four points from two away matches is a very positive result. However, when you look more closely at the performance, there are areas for improvement and we are aware of them. When you also look at the players’ attitude, I think we are on the right track,” he concluded.
The former midfielder is therefore balancing two objectives: meeting Senegal’s immediate expectations while gradually introducing his ideas to the team.
His opening results have provided a solid start, but the level of scrutiny surrounding the Lions means performances will continue to be closely assessed.
For Vieira, however, the passion surrounding Senegal is something to embrace rather than avoid. The demand for success reflects the country’s ambition, even if it also creates considerable pressure on the coach.
As Senegal continue their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, Vieira will hope his side can maintain their momentum while continuing to develop the style of football he wants to establish.
