Simba vs Yanga to be overseen by Moroccan referees

The much-anticipated Kariakoo derby between Simba SC and Young Africans SC will be officiated by a team of referees from Morocco, according to the latest match schedule.

The fixture, set to take place on 3 May at the Meja Isamuyo Stadium, is one of the most significant encounters in Tanzanian football and forms part of the 2025–26 NBC Premier League season. The match has been designated as fixture number 169 in the current campaign.

Officials confirmed that Moroccan referee Hamza El Faruq will take charge of proceedings as the centre referee. He will be supported by Lahsene Azkawi, who has been appointed as the first assistant referee, and Hamza El Nasri, who will serve as the second assistant.

Completing the officiating team, Mostafa Kchaaf has been named as the reserve referee, also known as the fourth official. His role will involve managing technical areas and assisting with administrative duties during the match.

The Kariakoo derby, contested by two of Tanzania’s most prominent clubs, regularly draws widespread attention from fans both domestically and beyond. Matches between Simba and Young Africans are known for their intensity, historic rivalry, and large crowds, making referee selection a critical aspect of match preparation.

The decision to appoint Moroccan officials reflects a broader effort to ensure neutrality and maintain high officiating standards for high-profile fixtures. Such appointments are not uncommon in major African league matches, particularly when the stakes are high and the outcome could influence the title race or league standings.

Both teams are expected to approach the game with determination, as the derby often carries implications beyond points on the table, including pride and local bragging rights. With the season progressing, each fixture becomes increasingly important, adding further significance to this encounter.

Supporters of both sides are likely to closely scrutinise the performance of the refereeing team, given the passionate nature of the rivalry. The presence of experienced international officials is intended to help ensure fairness and consistency throughout the match.

As anticipation builds ahead of Sunday’s clash, attention will not only be on the players but also on the referees tasked with maintaining order in one of East Africa’s most celebrated football fixtures.
