The Ghana Football Association has officially announced Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, entrusting the experienced tactician with leading the team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision, taken by the GFA Executive Council in collaboration with key stakeholders, marks a major step in Ghana’s preparations for the global tournament set to take place across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The 73-year old tactician comes in as replacement for Otto Addo who was relieved of his duties last month.
Queiroz arrives with a wealth of international experience and a strong World Cup pedigree. He previously guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran national football team at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.
His extensive résumé also includes spells with national teams such as Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, as well as high-profile club roles with Real Madrid CF and Manchester United.
The Portuguese coach is expected to bring tactical discipline, structure, and tournament experience to a Ghana side aiming to make a strong impact on the world stage.
Carlos Queiroz will begin work immediately, with preparations intensifying ahead of the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026.
Ghana are drawn in Group L, where they will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada, before facing heavyweight opponents England and Croatia.
With a challenging group ahead, the GFA will be hoping Queiroz’s vast experience at the highest level can guide the Black Stars through a demanding campaign and potentially beyond the group stage.
