Algeria legend Lakhdar Belloumi believes his son Mohamed has the ability to play for one of Europe’s biggest clubs after making an impressive start to life with Hull City.
The former Algeria international and coach says the 24-year-old winger should ultimately aim for clubs competing for major domestic and continental honours, although Mohamed remains focused on his current spell in England.
Speaking to Win Win following his son’s recall to the Algeria squad, Lakhdar said Mohamed would consider a major offer should one arrive.
“All his focus right now is on Hull City. If we receive any major offer, we wouldn’t object to him leaving,” Belloumi said.
“With all due respect to Hull City, but at this level, he deserves to play for a bigger club competing for domestic and continental titles, such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille and Manchester City.”
Mohamed has attracted increased attention following his performances for Hull, including a memorable display against Chelsea.
The Algerian winger scored both goals in Hull City’s draw with Chelsea, showcasing his attacking quality against one of the Premier League’s established clubs.
He then impressed again against Newcastle, coming close to adding to his tally despite Hull being unable to claim all three points.
His form has also earned him a return to the Algeria national team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Zambia and Burundi.
For Lakhdar, Mohamed’s rise represents the continuation of a dream that began during his son’s early years in Algeria.
“Mohamed dreamed of turning pro, and his goal was to play in Europe. So, I told him, ‘Do whatever you want’,” he said.
“We took the criticism he faced during his time in Algeria in stride, as if it were meaningless.”
Belloumi also addressed previous criticism suggesting that his son benefited from the family name rather than his ability.
“My son has always strived to achieve his dream, and I think what he’s accomplished now is the best response to all those who criticised him, claiming he was playing solely because of his name.”
Lakhdar added that Mohamed’s performances had earned his international recall on merit and expressed hope that the winger would continue to build on his progress.
“Mohamed’s performance with Hull City earned him a spot on the Algerian national team in style. God willing, he’ll do Algeria proud in upcoming competitions and keep the Beloumi name alive in Arab and world football.”
For now, Mohamed remains focused on Hull City, but his father’s comments underline the growing expectations surrounding a player whose early Premier League performances have already brought him back into Algeria’s plans.
