Chelsea make contact to sign Ivorian defender Coulibaly

Chelsea have stepped up their interest in highly rated Ivorian defender Abdoul Karim Coulibaly as competition grows across Europe for the young centre-back’s signature.

The 18-year-old, who plays for Werder Bremen, has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s standout young talents this season, attracting attention from several top clubs following a series of composed performances in defence.

Chelsea have already made initial contact with the player’s representatives, signalling their intent to move early in what is shaping up to be a competitive transfer race ahead of the summer window.

Coulibaly has made more than 20 league appearances this season and established himself as a regular starter at Bremen, despite his age.

His ability to read the game, combined with his physical presence and confidence on the ball, has made him one of the most sought-after young defenders in Europe.

However, Chelsea face strong competition, particularly from Paris Saint-Germain, who are reported to have already submitted an offer of €45 million for the player.

The bid is believed to align with Bremen’s valuation, with the German club expecting a fee between €40 million and €50 million.

At this stage, PSG appear to be leading the race, with reports suggesting the French side is also the preferred destination for the German-Ivorian defender.

Their early move has placed pressure on other interested clubs, including Chelsea, to act quickly if they are to secure his services.

Coulibaly’s rise has been rapid.

Since joining Bremen on a free transfer from Hamburg in July 2024, he has quickly adapted to top-flight football, earning a starting role and delivering consistent performances.

His development has been closely monitored by scouts across Europe, including Real Madrid, who are known for tracking emerging talent.

The growing list of interested clubs also includes Arsenal, Newcastle United, Napoli, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Olympique de Marseille, all of whom are said to be monitoring the situation closely.

With Werder Bremen preparing for their next Bundesliga fixture against FC Cologne, attention off the pitch is intensifying.

The coming weeks are expected to be decisive as clubs position themselves ahead of the transfer window.
