There was a moment of real concern for Himad Abdelli, but the scare has ultimately proven to be short-lived at Olympique de Marseille.
Still struggling to fully establish himself since his arrival two months ago, the Algerian midfielder faced another setback on Sunday night during Marseille’s Ligue 1 clash against AS Monaco at the Stade Louis II. Coming on late in the game, Abdelli entered a match that was already tilting in Monaco’s favor, with the hosts eventually securing a 2–1 victory despite a late goal from Amine Gouiri.
While his cameo had little impact on the outcome, it was what happened after the final whistle that raised alarm bells.
Abdelli was spotted leaving the stadium limping, his right ankle strapped in a brace. The sight immediately sparked fears of a potentially serious injury especially concerning given his delicate situation both at club and international level. The 24-year-old had already fallen out of favor with Algeria national team coach Vladimir Petković, having been left out of the squad for the March training camp in Italy.
Abdelli recovery
With Marseille initially remaining silent on the nature of the injury, uncertainty grew around the midfielder’s availability for the crucial final stretch of the season.
However, just days later, the tension has eased.
In a positive turn of events, Abdelli returned to full training with the Marseille squad on Tuesday, putting to rest fears of a prolonged absence. The quick recovery comes as a major relief for both player and club, especially with the Ligue 1 campaign entering its decisive phase.
Marseille are now gearing up for their upcoming league fixture against FC Metz, as they push for a coveted UEFA Champions League qualification spot. For Abdelli, the objective is clear: regain match fitness, earn more playing time, and prove his worth in a team where competition remains fierce.
After a difficult start to life in Marseille, this could yet be a turning point provided he can stay fit and seize his opportunities when they come.
