The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed an Egyptian refereeing team to oversee the first leg of the Confederation Cup semi-final between Algeria’s USM Alger and Morocco’s Olympique Safi.
The decision, confirmed by CAF’s referees committee, places experienced official Amin Omar at the centre of one of the competition’s most anticipated fixtures. The match forms part of the semi-final stage of Africa’s secondary club tournament, where regional rivalries and high stakes converge.
Full Egyptian Officiating Team Confirmed
Amin Omar will be supported by a team of fellow Egyptian officials. Mahmoud Abu Al-Rijal has been named as the first assistant referee, while Ahmed Hossam Taha will serve as second assistant. Mohamed Maarouf has been assigned the role of fourth official.
In addition to the on-field team, CAF has also confirmed the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the match. Mahmoud Ashour will oversee VAR operations, assisted by Hossam Azab Haggag as assistant video referee.
The appointment reflects CAF’s continued reliance on experienced officials for decisive fixtures, particularly at the semi-final stage where accuracy and control are critical.
First Leg Set for Algiers
The first leg of the tie is scheduled to be played in the Algerian capital on Saturday, 11 April. The fixture will see USM Alger host Olympique Safi in what is expected to be a closely contested encounter between two sides aiming to secure a place in the final.
With both clubs representing strong footballing traditions in North Africa, the match is likely to attract significant attention across the region. The role of the officiating team will therefore be under close scrutiny, particularly given the intensity typically associated with such fixtures.
Return Leg to Decide Finalist
The second leg will take place on Sunday, 19 April at the Al Massira Stadium in Safi, Morocco. This decisive encounter will determine which of the two teams progresses to the final of the Confederation Cup.
CAF’s structured approach to officiating appointments ensures continuity and neutrality across both legs, although different refereeing teams are often used for each fixture to maintain balance.
Importance of Refereeing at Crucial Stage
As the competition enters its final phase, the performance of match officials becomes increasingly significant. Decisions made during semi-final matches can have a direct impact on outcomes, making the selection of experienced referees a priority for CAF.
The appointment of an Egyptian team led by Amin Omar highlights the governing body’s confidence in their ability to manage high-pressure situations. Their experience at both domestic and international levels is expected to contribute to a well-controlled match environment.
Focus on Fair Play and Competition Integrity
CAF has consistently emphasised the importance of fair play and adherence to regulations throughout its competitions. The inclusion of VAR technology further underlines efforts to minimise errors and ensure that key decisions are reviewed when necessary.
As USM Alger and Olympique Safi prepare to meet in Algiers, attention will not only be on the players but also on the officials tasked with maintaining order and fairness.
With a place in the Confederation Cup final at stake, both teams will be aiming to deliver strong performances, while the refereeing team will play a crucial role in ensuring that the contest is decided on merit.
