Ivory Coast midfielder Jean-Michael Seri has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an 11-year career with the Elephants.
He featured in five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, won a continental title and represented his country at the FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old confirmed his decision in a message shared on social media, thanking teammates, coaches, the Ivorian Football Federation and supporters for their backing throughout his international career.
Seri’s departure marks the end of an era for one of Ivory Coast’s most accomplished midfielders, whose composure, technical ability and experience made him a regular presence in the national team for more than a decade.
The midfielder, who previously played for French side OGC Nice and English club Fulham, was part of one of the most successful periods in recent Ivorian football history.
During his time with the national team, Seri appeared in five editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, including the tournament that ended with Ivory Coast lifting the trophy on home soil in 2023.
He also represented the West African nation at the FIFA World Cup, adding football’s biggest international stage to an already distinguished career.
In announcing his retirement, Seri reflected on what representing his country had meant to him.
“Glory to God. After 11 years with the national team, 5 AFCON tournaments played (one of which was won), and a World Cup appearance, I announce today the end of my international career. Representing Côte d’Ivoire has been an honor and a responsibility that I have always carried with pride. I thank my teammates, the staff, the Federation, and all Ivorians who love and know football, for their trust and support.”
His statement underlined both the pride he took in wearing the national colours and the gratitude he felt towards everyone who contributed to his journey with the Elephants.
Although Seri has stepped away from international football, he made it clear that his playing career is far from over.
“Now it’s time to focus on the next stage of my club career, with the same determination. Thank you for everything.”
His decision allows him to concentrate fully on club football while closing the chapter on a national team career that spanned more than a decade.
For Ivory Coast, Seri leaves behind a legacy built on consistency rather than headlines. Often operating in the heart of midfield, he became known for controlling the tempo of matches, linking defence with attack and providing stability during major tournaments.
His international journey also mirrors the continued influence of experienced African players who have combined successful careers in Europe with long-term service to their national teams.
Winning the Africa Cup of Nations and representing Ivory Coast at the World Cup remain defining moments of Seri’s international career, achievements that place him among the respected figures of his generation.
