Kenya Harambee Starlets begin France camp ahead of WAFCON 2026 campaign

Kenya women’s national team, the Harambee Starlets, have begun their preparations for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a training camp in Miramas, France.

The team arrived in France as part of their build-up programme before travelling to Morocco for the tournament, which will take place from 25 July to 16 August across several cities.

Head coach Beldine Odemba says the pre-tournament camp will provide an important opportunity for the squad to improve in key areas before the competition begins.

“I am happy that the Federation has ensured that we travel to France for camp before heading to Morocco,” Odemba said.

Kenya have been drawn in Group A alongside tournament hosts Morocco, Senegal and Algeria, setting up a demanding opening phase for the East African side.

The Harambee Starlets will begin their campaign against Morocco on 26 July before taking on Senegal four days later. Their final group match will be against Algeria on 3 August.

Despite the difficult group, Odemba has challenged her players to approach every match with the mindset of a final as they chase a place in the latter stages of the competition.

“Our target is to reach the semi-finals, and we will approach every match with the belief that we can achieve our objective,” said Odemba.

The coach believes the team’s mentality and preparation will be crucial as Kenya attempt to make a strong impact against some of Africa’s leading women’s football nations.

The WAFCON will carry added importance this year as it also serves as a qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The top four teams at the tournament will automatically qualify for the global showpiece, while two additional teams will earn places in the inter-confederation play-offs.

Kenya and Tanzania will represent the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) region at the continental tournament.

Odemba has selected a squad featuring a mixture of experienced players and emerging talents as Kenya look to compete on the African stage.

Goalkeepers Annedy Kundu, Lilian Awuor and Vivian Shiyonzo have been included, while the defensive options feature Leah Andiema, Elizabeth Ochaka, Ruth Ingosi, Vivian Nasaka, Enez Mango, Euphrasier Shilwatso, Norah Ann and Mary Nthambi.

The midfield department includes Mwanalima Adam, Martha Amunyolete, Tereza Engesha, Fasila Adhiambo, Lorna Nyarinda, Mercy Airo, Airin Madalina and Shaline Nambengele.

Up front, Kenya will rely on Shirleen Opisa, Eglay Mukhwana, Marion Serenge, Violet Nanjala and Valerie Nekesa to provide attacking threat during the tournament.

With their France camp underway, the Harambee Starlets are now focused on fine-tuning their preparations before heading to Morocco, where they hope to challenge for a historic run at WAFCON 2026.
