Cape Verde Forward Cabral secures Brazilian move after World Cup campaign

Cape Verde international Jovane Cabral has completed a move to Brazilian club Grêmio after impressing during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a new chapter in the attacker’s career.

The 28-year-old joins the Brazilian side on a permanent deal, with Grêmio confirming his arrival as they strengthen coach Luís Castro’s attacking options ahead of the new season.

Cabral is expected in Porto Alegre on 14 July, where he will immediately link up with his new teammates and begin preparations after representing Cape Verde at the World Cup in North America.

For African football, the transfer represents another example of the growing recognition earned by players from the continent following an expanded 48-team World Cup, with Cape Verde’s performances attracting attention beyond Europe.

The winger arrives in Brazil after playing a key role in Cape Verde’s memorable tournament campaign.

He started the Blue Sharks‘ goalless draw against Spain during the group stage, helping the island nation secure one of the tournament’s notable results against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.

Cabral was again included in the starting line-up when Cape Verde faced Argentina in the knockout phase.

Although the African side eventually suffered a 3-2 defeat after extra time, the performance further highlighted Cape Verde’s competitiveness on the global stage and capped an encouraging tournament for the nation.

The World Cup campaign has now been followed by a significant career move, with Grêmio securing the experienced attacker without paying a transfer fee.

The Brazilian club believes Cabral’s experience across several European leagues, combined with his international pedigree, will add depth and versatility to its forward line.

Before arriving in South America, Cabral built his career in Europe after emerging from the renowned Sporting CP academy in Portugal.

His development at Sporting opened the door to opportunities across several clubs, with spells at Olympiacos in Greece as well as Italian sides Salernitana and Lazio.

Those experiences have equipped him with exposure to different footballing cultures and tactical systems, qualities Grêmio will hope translate into immediate contributions in Brazil.

His move also highlights the increasing mobility of African footballers, who continue to expand their careers across different continents after making their mark at international tournaments.

Cape Verde’s World Cup campaign helped showcase several of the country’s players to a wider audience, with Cabral among those benefiting from increased visibility following the tournament.

Although the Blue Sharks were unable to progress beyond the knockout stage after their dramatic defeat to Argentina, they demonstrated their ability to compete with elite opposition by holding Spain to a draw and pushing the South American giants into extra time.

For Grêmio, signing a player with recent World Cup experience represents a notable addition as the club looks to improve its attacking options under Luís Castro.

For Cabral, meanwhile, the move offers an opportunity to begin a fresh challenge outside Europe for the first time in his professional career.
