Cameroon great Samuel Eto’o says Mbappé deserves greater recognition

Samuel Eto’o has praised Kylian Mbappé ahead of France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final against Spain, describing the French captain as one of football’s outstanding figures.

The former Cameroon striker shared his views before Tuesday’s last-four clash, highlighting Mbappé’s influence both on and off the pitch as France continue their pursuit of another World Cup title.

Eto’o, one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers and the current president of Cameroonian football, said the Real Madrid forward has consistently performed at the highest level and has already built a legacy that deserves wider appreciation.

According to comments relayed by Le Parisien and later reported by L’Équipe, Eto’o believes Mbappé’s impact extends far beyond his goals, pointing to his leadership and ability to inspire teammates during major tournaments.

The endorsement from one of Africa’s greatest football icons comes as France prepare for another defining World Cup encounter, with Mbappé expected to lead Didier Deschamps‘ side against Spain in the semi-finals.

Eto’o said he has been impressed not only by Mbappé’s performances but also by the consistency he has shown throughout his career.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker believes the French international has already established himself among football’s elite despite still being only 27 years old.

He argued that Mbappé has influenced multiple generations of football fans through his achievements and should already be regarded as one of the most significant figures in French football history.

Beyond his technical ability, Eto’o highlighted the psychological effect Mbappé has on opponents before a match even begins.

According to the Cameroonian legend, the France captain possesses a level of presence and charisma that immediately places opposing teams under pressure.

He suggested that rivals fear Mbappé because of his ability to change the outcome of a game at any moment, making him one of the most decisive players in world football.

However, Eto’o also questioned whether the French forward has received the level of recognition his career merits.

Despite his achievements and influence, the African football icon believes Mbappé still has not been universally acknowledged as the greatest French player of his generation or among the country’s all-time football legends.

Eto’o publicly wondered what more the France captain must accomplish to earn that status.

His admiration also extends beyond footballing ability.

The former Cameroon international said he values Mbappé’s willingness to speak openly on important matters, suggesting that his leadership qualities are reflected not only through his performances but also through his conduct away from the pitch.

For African football, Eto’o’s comments carry particular significance.

As one of the continent’s most decorated players, his assessment reflects the respect Mbappé commands among African football figures ahead of one of the biggest matches of the tournament..
