Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup record includes decisive goals, landmark appearances and six tournament campaigns, but it also contains a number of difficult nights in which Portugal’s ambitions ended in disappointment.
The Portugal forward has been among football’s most influential figures across two decades, producing memorable moments on the sport’s biggest stage. Yet his World Cup career has also featured matches in which he struggled to influence the outcome, whether because of close defensive marking, injury, tactical pressure or Portugal’s failure to convert opportunities.
From his first tournament in Germany in 2006 to Portugal’s elimination in Qatar in 2022, five fixtures stand out as particularly disappointing moments in Ronaldo’s World Cup story.
France end Portugal’s hopes in 2006
Portugal’s semi-final against France at the 2006 World Cup represented Ronaldo’s first opportunity to reach the final of the competition.
However, Portugal were beaten 1-0 after Zinedine Zidane converted a penalty in the 33rd minute. Ronaldo played the full match but was unable to find a way through a tightly organised French defence.
Despite an energetic display, the forward did not make the decisive contribution Portugal required as France progressed to the final.
Portugal’s campaign ended with a fourth-place finish after they lost 3-1 to Germany in the third-place play-off.
Spain defeat Portugal in South Africa
Portugal’s 2010 World Cup ended in the last 16 when Spain secured a 1-0 victory.
David Silva scored in the 63rd minute to send Spain through, while Ronaldo’s attempts to change the match were repeatedly stopped by goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
The most dangerous of Ronaldo’s efforts came from a direct free-kick in the first half, but Casillas dealt with the threat from his Real Madrid team-mate.
After the final whistle, Ronaldo reacted angrily, spitting towards a camera and declining to speak to journalists. He directed questions towards Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz instead.
Germany inflict heavy 2014 defeat
Portugal began their 2014 World Cup campaign with a 4-0 defeat by Germany in Group G.
Ronaldo played despite knee and ankle injuries and was not at his best physically. Portugal’s heavy opening loss placed the team under immediate pressure in the group.
A 2-2 draw with the United States followed, before Portugal beat Ghana 2-1 in their final group match. Those results were not enough to secure progress, with Portugal eliminated on goal difference behind the United States.
The defeat to Germany became the defining setback of Portugal’s tournament, as Ronaldo was unable to help his side recover from the damage caused in the opening fixture.
Uruguay halt Portugal’s 2018 momentum
Portugal arrived in the 2018 World Cup last 16 with optimism after Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Spain in the group stage.
But Uruguay ended Portugal’s hopes with a 2-1 win, using a disciplined defensive performance to limit Ronaldo’s influence.
Portugal’s forward line could not break down Uruguay’s organised defence, and Ronaldo was unable to produce the response needed to rescue his side.
Uruguay advanced to the quarter-finals, while Portugal left the tournament earlier than they had hoped after a promising start.
Morocco bring Qatar campaign to an emotional end
Portugal’s 2022 World Cup ended in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 defeat by Morocco at Al Thumama Stadium.
Ronaldo started on the bench and entered the match six minutes into the second half, but he could not change the direction of the contest.
He was unable to create a major threat against goalkeeper Yassine Bounou as Morocco protected their lead and secured progression.
At full-time, Ronaldo left the tournament in tears, with Portugal’s hopes of extending their campaign over.
The match against Morocco became one of the most emotional exits of Ronaldo’s World Cup career, ending another attempt to take Portugal to the latter stages of football’s biggest competition.
