The United States will rely on home advantage and the backing of its supporters when it faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday.
The knockout match will take place in Santa Clara, California, where the hosts hope familiar surroundings and home support can help them continue their campaign after topping Group D.
The United States reached the knockout phase as group winners, while Bosnia and Herzegovina secured qualification as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, setting up the first official meeting between the two nations in World Cup history.
Victory for the United States would send Mauricio Pochettino’s side into the round of 16, where they would face either Belgium or Senegal.
Strong group-stage campaign secures top spot
The American team enjoyed an impressive start to the tournament, producing convincing performances in its opening two matches.
The campaign began with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Paraguay before another confident display earned a 2-0 win against Australia.
Those successive victories secured qualification for the knockout stage with one group match still to play.
Although the United States was beaten 3-2 by Türkiye in its final group fixture, the defeat did not prevent the team from finishing at the top of Group D.
Under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, the Americans collected six points, ending the group stage two points ahead of both Australia and Paraguay.
Impressive World Cup pedigree
The United States enters the match with a long history of appearances on football’s biggest stage.
Its best World Cup performance came in the inaugural tournament in 1930, when the team reached the semi-finals and finished in third place.
The Americans also advanced to the quarter-finals in the 2002 edition and have regularly reached the knockout stages in recent decades.
Previous appearances in the round of 16 came in the 1934, 1994, 2010, 2014 and 2022 tournaments, highlighting the nation’s consistent presence beyond the group stage.
The team will now attempt to add another knockout victory to that record as it seeks further progress on home soil.
Bosnia and Herzegovina recover to reach last 32
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s route to the knockout stage proved more challenging.
The side finished third in Group B behind Switzerland and Canada but accumulated enough points to qualify as one of the competition’s best third-placed teams.
Its campaign opened with a 1-1 draw against Canada before a difficult 4-1 defeat to Switzerland appeared to leave qualification in doubt.
However, Bosnia and Herzegovina responded in its final group match with a crucial 3-1 victory over Qatar.
That result lifted the team to four points, enough to secure a place in the round of 32.
Progress beyond the group stage marks a significant achievement for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The nation exited the 2014 World Cup during the group phase and failed to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 editions, making its return to the knockout rounds a notable milestone.
First competitive meeting between the nations
Wednesday’s encounter will be the first official competitive match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The teams have previously met only in three friendly matches.
The United States won two of those meetings, including a 1-0 victory in December 2021.
While the hosts will look to use home support and their strong tournament form to continue their World Cup journey, Bosnia and Herzegovina arrives with renewed confidence after recovering from a difficult start to the competition.
Having already exceeded expectations by advancing from the group stage, the Bosnian side will aim to produce another surprise and deny the United States a place in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
