Ayew confident Black Stars can respond after Croatia setback

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has urged supporters to continue believing in the Black Stars despite their 2-1 defeat by Croatia, insisting the team remains fully focused on making a strong run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The result in Saturday’s final Group L match ended Ghana’s unbeaten start to the tournament. However, it had no impact on the team’s progress, with the Black Stars having already done enough through their earlier performances to secure a place in the Round of 32.

Speaking after the match, Ayew acknowledged that Ghana did not perform to its usual standard but expressed confidence that the squad would recover quickly before the knockout stage begins.

“We stay positive and on to the next game. Today was a weird game. We were a bit sloppy, and they (Croatia) capitalized on our mistakes.”

The captain said the defeat should be viewed as an opportunity for improvement rather than a damaging setback. He explained that the players would carefully assess what went wrong and make the necessary adjustments ahead of their next fixture.

Despite the disappointment of losing their final group game, Ayew stressed that confidence within the camp remains intact. He said the players are united in their determination to produce better performances as the tournament enters its knockout phase.

Ghana had already put themselves in a commanding position before facing Croatia. Victory over Panama in their opening Group L fixture, followed by a hard-earned draw against England, provided enough points to guarantee qualification before the final group match was played.

As a result, although Croatia secured victory in Philadelphia, the Black Stars still progressed to the Round of 32 alongside England.

Attention now turns to Ghana’s next challenge, with Colombia awaiting in the knockout stage. Ayew believes the loss to Croatia could ultimately benefit the team by reinforcing the level of concentration and quality required to succeed against the world’s leading nations.

According to the skipper, the match served as a reminder that mistakes are often punished at the highest level of international football and that Ghana must be sharper in the decisive stages of the competition.

The Black Stars will now seek to put the defeat behind them and rediscover the form that secured their place in the knockout rounds. Having impressed in their opening two matches, Ghana will aim to build on those performances as they continue their pursuit of World Cup success.

While the loss brought an end to their unbeaten run in the tournament, it has not altered the team’s primary objective. With qualification already secured, Ghana’s focus is now firmly fixed on overcoming Colombia and extending their stay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ayew’s message to supporters was one of optimism, encouraging Ghanaians to remain confident that the team can respond positively after its first setback of the tournament and produce the performances needed to progress further in the competition.
