Italian Serie A club Como have become the first side to make an approach for Ghana defender Jerome Opoku following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 27-year-old centre-back has emerged as one of the standout performers for the Black Stars during the tournament, with a string of assured displays attracting growing interest from clubs across Europe.
According to reports, Como have already held preliminary discussions with Opoku’s representatives as they seek to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The Italian side’s interest comes after the defender played a central role in Ghana’s successful World Cup campaign, helping the Black Stars build one of the competition’s most disciplined defensive records.
Despite moving quickly, Como are not expected to have a clear path to securing the Ghana international’s signature.
Reports indicate that clubs from both Spain and England are also monitoring the defender’s progress, with interest likely to increase once the World Cup comes to an end.
A club from La Liga and a newly-promoted Premier League side are both understood to be following Opoku’s situation closely as they consider potential summer reinforcements.
Como’s pursuit of the defender is also linked to their wider transfer plans. The Serie A club are reportedly considering Opoku as an alternative option should attempts to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah prove unsuccessful or if they lose promising centre-back Jacobo Ramon, who has attracted considerable transfer interest during the current window.
Opoku’s performances in Ghana’s run to the knockout stages have significantly enhanced his reputation. Calm in possession and commanding in defence, the centre-back has established himself as one of the key figures in the Black Stars’ back line throughout the tournament.
The defender was absent from Ghana’s final Group L fixture against Croatia after sustaining a minor knock. However, he is expected to be available again for the Black Stars’ Round of 32 meeting with Colombia.
His anticipated return would provide a significant boost for Ghana as they prepare for the knockout phase of the tournament.
Opoku remains under contract with Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir until 2027, meaning any club wishing to secure his services would have to negotiate with his current employers.
His strong displays on the World Cup stage have nevertheless increased his value, and reports suggest more European clubs are expected to enter the race for his signature in the coming weeks.
With Como having already taken the first formal step by opening discussions with the player’s representatives, the Serie A side have positioned themselves at the front of the pursuit. However, with interest also emerging from Spain and England, competition for the Ghana international is expected to intensify as the transfer window progresses and the World Cup draws to a close.
