2026 World Cup: Martinelli’s stoppage-time winner sends Brazil into last 16

Brazil survived a major World Cup scare before coming from behind to beat Japan 2–1 and book their place in the Round of 16, thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Gabriel Martinelli in Houston.

The five-time world champions looked in trouble for long spells after Kaishu Sano’s first-half strike put Japan ahead, but Brazil’s depth and second-half response eventually turned the match on its head.

Japan had started brightly and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Sano capitalised on a midfield mistake, driving forward before unleashing a powerful right-footed finish past Alisson.

The goal stunned Brazil and reflected an impressive, aggressive tactical approach from Hajime Moriyasu’s side, who pressed high and refused to be overawed by their more decorated opponents.

Brazil responded after the break and drew level in the 56th minute through Casemiro, who rose highest to head home from a well-delivered cross by Gabriel Magalhães.

The equaliser shifted momentum firmly towards Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who began to dominate possession and increase pressure on Japan’s back line.

Despite Brazil’s control and a clear advantage in chances, 19 shots compared to Japan’s five, the breakthrough did not arrive until deep into injury time. With the match seemingly destined for extra time, Japan lost possession on the edge of their own box.

Bruno Guimarães quickly seized the moment, threading a precise pass into the area for Martinelli.

The Arsenal forward kept his composure, taking a touch before guiding a right-footed finish in off the inside of the post past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the 95th minute.

The goal sparked immediate celebrations and secured Brazil’s passage into the last 16.

The victory also highlighted Brazil’s strength in depth, with substitutes once again playing a decisive role.

Martinelli’s introduction proved crucial, while Endrick also impressed after coming on, adding further attacking energy to a side already packed with options.

Casemiro later praised the mentality within the squad, insisting the team’s collective belief and depth were key to the comeback.

“The team’s greatest strength was our mindset,” said the former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder who seems set to join Inter Miami this summer.

“We kept up the pressure in our attacking play. In a World Cup, it is crucial to value the players coming off the bench. Endrick came on and played very well today, Martinelli is another great player, and Rayan has been replacing Raphinha really well. That’s the spirit, and this is the squad to win the World Cup.”

The result ends Japan’s campaign after another disciplined and spirited performance, while Brazil move forward with renewed confidence after a test of resilience against one of the tournament’s most organised sides.
