Newcastle United have made significant progress in negotiations with Manchester City over the transfer of holding midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with the two clubs reportedly close to reaching an agreement.
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, discussions between Newcastle and Manchester City have advanced to the point where the clubs are almost in agreement over the move. Newcastle are hoping to resolve the remaining issues surrounding Gonzalez’s contract at the beginning of this week.
The negotiations concern the 24-year-old midfielder, whose current market value is estimated at €40m. Gonzalez remains under contract with Manchester City until 30 June 2029.
Should the transfer be completed, Newcastle would add a player who is already contracted to one of the Premier League’s leading clubs. However, the available information indicates that the deal has not yet been finalised, with work still required on the contractual details before the move can be formally concluded.
Gonzalez has made one appearance for Manchester City in the 2026-27 season so far. That came in the English Super Cup against Arsenal, where Manchester City suffered a 3-0 defeat.
The midfielder did not register a goal or an assist in the match. His appearance in that fixture is the only involvement listed for him in the current campaign.
Newcastle’s interest has now progressed to the stage of direct negotiations between the clubs. Romano’s report suggests that the main focus is on completing the agreement between Newcastle and Gonzalez at the start of the week, after substantial progress was made in discussions with Manchester City.
Gonzalez’s contract length is a significant detail in the talks, with the player tied to Manchester City for almost three more years. His reported €40m market value also provides an indication of the scale of the transfer under discussion, although no completed fee has been confirmed in the information available.
For now, Newcastle and Manchester City remain in negotiations. The clubs are described as being close to an agreement, while Newcastle are aiming to settle the outstanding contractual matters soon. Gonzalez’s most recent competitive involvement came in the 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the English Super Cup, where he played without contributing a goal or assist.
