2026 World cup: Mohannad Lasheen suspended for Egypt’s world cup clash with Australia

Egypt will be without midfielder Mohannad Lasheen for their Round of 32 match against Australia after FIFA confirmed the player has been suspended because of accumulated yellow cards during the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.

The decision means Lasheen is unavailable for Friday’s knockout fixture, which is scheduled to kick off at 9:00pm Cairo and Mecca time, dealing Egypt a setback as they prepare for one of their most important matches of the tournament.

Lasheen’s suspension follows bookings in two separate group-stage matches, placing him beyond the threshold permitted under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations.

Two bookings lead to automatic suspension

Lasheen first entered the referee’s notebook during Egypt’s second group-stage match against New Zealand.

The midfielder received a yellow card in the contest, which Egypt won 3-1 to strengthen their position in Group G.

He was then shown a second yellow card during Egypt’s final group-stage fixture against Iran.

That match finished in a 1-1 draw, with the second caution triggering an automatic suspension for the next match under FIFA’s disciplinary rules.

As a result, Lasheen will not be available for Egypt’s opening knockout-stage encounter against Australia.

FIFA’s yellow card rule explained

FIFA had previously confirmed that yellow cards accumulated during the group stage would be cleared before the knockout rounds in certain circumstances.

However, that rule only applies to players who collected a single booking during the group phase.

Players who received two yellow cards before the end of the group stage remain subject to suspension for the following match.

Lasheen falls into that category after being cautioned against both New Zealand and Iran.

Consequently, FIFA has officially ruled that the Egyptian international must serve a one-match suspension and will be ineligible for the Round of 32.

Egypt prepare for Australia without key midfielder

Egypt secured qualification for the knockout stage after progressing from Group G and now face Australia in their bid to reach the next round of the tournament.

The absence of Lasheen leaves the coaching staff with a midfield decision ahead of Friday’s encounter.

Having featured throughout the group stage, the midfielder had been part of Egypt’s campaign as the team advanced beyond the opening phase of the competition.

His suspension means the Pharaohs must adjust their plans for a match that will determine whether they continue their World Cup journey.

Australia will provide the opposition in the Round of 32 after earning their own place in the knockout rounds.

The match is expected to be one of the key fixtures of the next stage, with both sides aiming to secure a place in the last 16.

Suspension confirmed before knockout phase

The confirmation from FIFA removes any uncertainty surrounding Lasheen’s availability.

Although disciplinary records are partially reset after the completion of the group stage, the regulations make a clear distinction between players with one caution and those who accumulated two bookings before the knockout rounds.

Lasheen’s yellow cards against New Zealand and Iran mean he does not benefit from the reset introduced by FIFA for players carrying only a single caution.

Instead, the midfielder must serve his suspension immediately, ruling him out of Egypt’s meeting with Australia.

With kickoff approaching, Egypt will now focus on preparing for the Round of 32 without one of their midfield options, as they seek to overcome Australia and continue their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
